Interesting from a US perspective and a great summary - in the UK we have already reached 50 % of display  monies being spent on ad networks and think it may go higher over the next two years.

However, more and more publishers are dissatisfied with the impact of networks have on yields and may start fighting back by removing networks from their inventory.

The effect of this may be to drive yields down further on networks as high reach / engagement premium sites are needed to maintain higher cpms/cpas.

Equally the likes of Rubicon and Admeld(ad networks aggregators) may further change the environment further , but that is another subject entirely....
